چکیده

A system organized as a Hierarchy of Processor-And-Memory (HPAM) extends the familiar notion of memory hierarchy by including processors with diierent performance in diierent levels of the hierarchy. Tasks are assigned to diierent hierarchy levels according to their degree of parallelism. This paper studies the spatial locality (with respect to degree of parallelism) behavior of simulated parallelized benchmarks in multi-level HPAM systems, and presents an inter-level cache coherence protocol that supports inclusion and multiple block sizes on an HPAM architecture. Inter-level miss rates and traac simulation results show that the use of multiple data transfer sizes (as opposed to a unique size) across the HPAM hierarchy allows the reduction of data traac between the uppermost levels in the hierarchy while not degrading the miss rate in the lowest level.

Parallelizing Molecular Dynamics using Spatial Decomposition

Several algorithms have been used for parallel molecular dynamics, including the replicated algorithm and those based on spatial decompositions. The repli-cated algorithm stores the entire system's coordinates and forces at each processor, and therefore has a low overhead in maintaining the data distribution. Spatial decompositions distribute the data, providing better locality and scalability ...

Cache Memories

The use of cache memories are so pervasive in today’s computer systems it is difficult to imagine processors without them. Cache memories, along with virtual memories and processor registers form a continuum of memory hierarchies that rely on the principle of locality of reference. Most applications exhibit temporal and spatial localities among instructions and data. Spatial locality implies th...

Crafting Data Structures: A Study of Reference Locality in Refinement-Based Pathfinding

The widening gap between processor speed and memory latency increases the importance of crafting data structures and algorithms to exploit temporal and spatial locality. Refinement-based pathfinding algorithms, such as Classic Refinement, find near-optimal paths in very large sparse graphs where traditional search techniques fail to generate paths in acceptable time. In this paper we present a ...
